After the Harvest

The Book of Ruth has a background intricately tied to grain and the harvest. "Grain" can be particular crops like barley or wheat.

Here are the steps in ancient grain production (as described in The Lexham Bible Dictionary):
  1. Plowing (1 Sam. 11:5, Isa. 2:4; Joel 3:10)
  2. Planting (Gen. 26:12; Deut. 22:9; Jer. 50:16)
  3. Harvesting (Deut. 6:19; Jer. 50:16; Joel 3:13)
  4. Stacking stalks in sheaves (Gen. 37:7; Ruth 2:7, 15; Zech. 12:6)
  5. Transporting sheaves to the threshing floor (Amos 2:13; Micah 4:2)
  6. Threshing (Deut. 25:4; Judg. 6:11; 2 Sam. 24:16-25) - See video #1 below
  7. Winnowing (Exod. 15:7; Job 13:25; Isa. 30:24) - See video #2 below (especially at 2:28).
  8. Sifting (Amos 9:9; Luke 22:31) - See video #2 below (especially at 6:23).
  9. Milling (Gen. 18:6), parching (2 Sam. 17:28), or storing (Joel 1:17) - See video #3 below.
